MATLAB Seminar
Advancing Geoscience Workflows with MATLAB:
Live Demos & Practical Tools

AGENDA
MATLAB is more than a programming language; it is a platform supporting the full geoscience data workflow, including data access, preprocessing, analysis, mapping, and visualization. Through practical code examples, this seminar will show how MATLAB built-in tools, low-code capabilities, and AI assisted workflows can improve efficiency and productivity. Participants will also be introduced to a rich ecosystem of community-developed toolboxes and self-paced learning resources.
Seminar Topics
- MATLAB as a Platform: Connecting the geoscience workflow in one environment, using built-in apps and tools, Live Scripts, and GenAI for programming with minimal manual coding.
- What’s New: Recent MATLAB capabilities and updates relevant to Earth scientists.
- Data Access & Curation: Importing, filtering, cleaning, and managing diverse scientific datasets.
- Geospatial Analysis & Mapping: Working with web-based geospatial data, maps, and visual exploration.
- Signal Processing: Practical methods for signal processing and time series analysis.
- Image Processing: Tools for interactive image analysis, including 3D imaging.
- Generative AI for Programming: Using AI assistance with MATLAB Apps and Live Scripts to develop, explain, and improve code.
- Agentic AI Workflows: Using AI agents to plan and carry out multi-step tasks across data, code, analysis, and reporting.
- Workflow Integration: Seamless interaction with legacy and modern software (e.g., Python, FORTRAN, C, Jupyter, GMT), bridging old and new tools.
- Machine Learning: Applying machine learning to geoscience problems.
- Performance & Scale: Code optimization, parallel computing, and HPC for data- and computeintensive workflows.
- Reproducible & Open Science: Structuring, sharing, and reusing code, workflows, and results.
- Learning & Teaching resources: Self-paced courses, resources, and practical strategies for integrating computational workflows and AI into education.

About the presenter:
Kostas Leptokaropoulos is the global Academic Manager for Geoscience at MathWorks, based in Cambridge, UK. His role is to support academics in making the most of MATLAB for research and education.
Kostas is an Environmental Engineer holding a PhD in Seismology. He has served as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and as a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. He has worked on European-scale Scientific and Research Infrastructure projects (e.g., EPOS, SERA, SHEER, EURO-LAB). Kostas has published over 25 peerreviewed research papers and has performed more than 130 scientific and educational presentations, seminars and invited talks. Kostas convenes the EGU ESSI Session on Advancing Geoscience Research Software and is a visiting teaching assistant at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Campus-Wide License Installation Guidelines
Install MATLAB on personal computers and in computer labs:
- Go to mathworks.com and sign in using only your University email address.
- Click “Install MATLAB” and follow the prompts to download and install MATLAB products. (Note: For multiple installations that are all the same, you can Install Noninteractively.)
- Select the license labeled MATLAB (Individual) when prompted.
- Download User Guide
Users will be prompted to sign in with their University email address the first time they run MATLAB on a specific computer in a computer lab or classroom. Thereafter, they can work offline on that computer.
At each release, install the latest release on shared computers to make all new products and features available to users.
Additional information:
- Install MATLAB on Personal Computers – Campus-Wide License (5:06)
- Install MATLAB on Shared Computers – Campus-Wide License (4:57)
Install MATLAB on permanently offline machines
For permanently offline computers that never connect to the internet, see Install MathWorks Products on Offline Computer. Use the license labeled MATLAB (Designated Computer). The administrator of the University must assign the user to the Designated Computer license.
